The year is almost at its end, and everyone is anxious to get the last work done for the year. While you might have the urge to rush out and just forget about the office for a few days this holiday season, stop and consider cleaning the office before the holidays. As daunting as the task may feel, you will be glad you did when you get to start the new year in a clean office!
Cleaning the office before the holidays
Nobody likes a dirty, smelly environment. Avoid coming back to the office in a worse state than you left it by making sure a few things are in place before you leave! Here are some useful tips to get the cleaning started:
Organise your desk
It might seem like an annoying thing to do before you leave, especially if you still have a lot of work to finish. But you will thank yourself when you get to start the new year at a neat and tidy desk. Go through everything lying on your desk and in the drawers. Toss everything you won’t need next year. Put everything else back in their place so that you don’t have to look for anything when you get back to your desk.
Clean your PC
Whether you have a desktop or a laptop, your PC should be on your cleaning list. It’s a good idea to sterilise the keyboard. Research has found that it’s 20 000 times dirtier than a toilet! Be sure to switch off the PC before you clean it. You can use a microfiber cloth and isopropyl alcohol (available at pharmacies) to clean the keyboard. To clean the screen, dilute the isopropyl alcohol with filtered water, and use a microfiber cloth to wipe the screen very gently. Don’t clean the screen too often, however, as it will eventually damage the coating. Don’t spray the PC directly with a spray bottle.
Check the fridge
Empty the fridge to avoid having rotted food when you come back after the holidays. Get everyone in the office to take their food out to see what is left in the fridge. If nobody claimed it, it’s safe to say that you can just throw it out. Ask everyone to take their food home when they leave. It’s also a good idea to wipe down the inside of the fridge with a mixture of water and white vinegar.
Wash the dishes
Make sure that all the dishes are washed before you close. Ask everyone to wash the dishes they use to avoid leaving everything for the unfortunate last person to leave the building. The last thing you want is to come back to an office and start your year with no clean coffee cups!
Take out the garbage
Don’t leave without taking out the garbage, especially if you had to throw out food. It will just stink up the office and make it look untidy. If you’re throwing out a lot of paper, plastic, or glass bottles, consider recycling them.
Hire a professional cleaner
If you don’t feel like cleaning the office before the holidays yourself, consider hiring a professional cleaning company to clean your office properly. They have the tools and the expertise to clean everything from the carpets to the restrooms. What better way to start the new year fresh than with a sparkling clean office?
