Tips To Recycle At Home

Recycling sounds like a very complicated thing to incorporate into your life. But in reality, it can actually be very easy. If you know where to start and what to do, recycling becomes a part of your daily routine. Here are some suggestions on how you can recycle at home:

Make it convenient

Don't put your recycling containers at the back of your yard where it's not easily accessible. If you have to go out of your way to recycle at home, you will get discouraged very quickly. If your containers are too far out of your way, you will find excuses more easily. When it's raining, when you're in a hurry, and when it's late at night, it still needs to be convenient to stick to recycling. That being said, don't put your containers in your way, either. If you constantly feel like your space is too cluttered or you have to move the containers around to be able to carry on with your usual routine, you will be feeling the urge to get rid of those containers very quickly. Convenience is key. Find an unused are inside your house where the containers will be easily accessible, but not in your way.

Split your trash

You will need at least four or five containers. They don't have to be the same size, as the waste you will be using each for might not take up the same amount of space. But if you're a little OCD, rather have them the same size. Mark them clearly so you (or your guests) don't get confused when you want to throw something away. The categories you can split them into are:

  • Paper
  • Plastic
  • Glass
  • Metal
  • General/food waste

Although these are usually colour coded, there isn't really a specific standard to use. The colours usually include blue, green, yellow, and red, but you can decide which colour you want to use for which item. When you take your trash to be recycled, just make sure that you check the labels properly.
